Description
Sunrise on Astoria Column. Sunrise announced a new day and the sky was azure blue high atop Coxcomb Hill early on a January, 2019, morning. Astoria Column stood in bold relief against the sky as the sun contrasted the Column in light and shadow. The bottom ring on the column summarizes the thousands of years of extraordinary history of the Astoria region with the phrase, "Before the White Man Came." Beginning on May 11, 1792 with Robert Gray sailing into the mouth of the Columbia River, and spiraling up the rest of the column are pictures and descriptions of historical events after "The White Man Came" including the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the fur trade and founding of Astoria, and travelers on the Oregon Trail. January, 2019.
