The small hamlet of Index, Washington, sits on the western shore of the North Fork of the Skykomish River, a mile north of US 2. Index was platted in 1893 by Amos and Persis Gunn, anticipating rapid growth when the Great Northern Railway was built through the valley. As early as 1859, gold prospectors had moved through, seeking precious metals. The Sunset Copper Mine, seven miles north along the river was incorporated in 1897 and became the largest mining operation west o the Cascades. Heybrook Lumber Company developed a large mill across the river from the town.
